Mid-August Lunch 2008
U – 72 minutes – in Italian with English subtitles
A middle-aged man lives with his elderly mother in Rome, and is stuck in their stifling apartment during the summer public holiday. When his landlord and his doctor also foist their older relatives on him, he has to tend to every whim and demand of four formidable women.
Making his directorial debut as he neared 60-years-old, with a low budget and a non-professional cast in their 80s and 90s, this mamma’s boy’s perspective on ageing is in turns warm, thoughtful and touching. Thoroughly charming, delightful and funny, it’s a small film with a huge heart.
A big winner at film festivals and with Italian critics, it received 4 awards at Venice, an honourable mention in London, and other prizes for best new director, and as a first feature film.
