The Draughtsman’s Contract (1982)
103 minutes – certificate 15 – in English
Directed by Peter Greenaway
Starring Anthony Higgins, Janet Suzman, Anne-Louise Lambert, Hugh Fraser
In 17th century England, an arrogant artist is commissioned to sketch a dozen landscapes of a
country estate, but it becomes the grounds for sexual favours and seductions, plays for power, and
a murder mystery, in which he finds himself increasingly embroiled.
Taking visual and musical cues from Caravaggio, de La Tour, Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Henry
Purcell, it crafts an intricate Baroque backdrop, convoluted by exaggerations and anachronisms.
Peter Greenaway had a breakthrough hit with this witty, funny, original arthouse puzzle.
“Extravagant costumes, a twisting plot, elegantly barbed dialogue and a mesmerising score by
Michael Nyman make the film a treat for ear, eye and mind.”
Winner of the Grand Prix from the Belgian Film Critics Association.
Counted among the best British films ever made by the British Film Institute and The Telegraph.
