Three Days of the Condor (1975)
117 minutes – certificate 15 – in English
Directed by Sydney Pollack
Starring Robert Redford, Faye Dunaway, Cliff Robertson, Max von Sydow, John Houseman
A CIA researcher has an uneventful role in the organisation, scanning literature for potential intel,
until he returns to his office to find all his colleagues gone. As he tries to untangle the web of who
knows what and who can be trusted, he realises he is a target himself, and goes on the run, taking
a bystander with him, while evading the menacing man in a trench-coat on his tail.
One of a series of paranoid thrillers that took off in the decade of administrative mistrust and
political aftershocks, this has espionage intrigue and tense suspense. The New York City
architecture, strong acting and lingering conspiracy contribute to the nervous atmosphere. Despite
playing a nerdy everyman, Robert Redford’s single set of clothing, and how he wore it, became so
popular it was nicknamed “three days of the collar”.
Winner of 2 acting awards for Max von Sydow, a special prize for the direction, and named best
motion picture screenplay by the Mystery Writers of America.
Counted among the top 5 spy films in The Guinness Book of Film.
