The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
102 minutes – certificate U – in English
Directed by Michael Curtiz and William Keighley
Starring Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Basil Rathbone, Claude Rains, Eugene Pallette
Defending the downtrodden from oppressive authorities, a heroic bandit steals from the rich to give to the poor, using expert archery and skilled swordplay. With his band of Merry Men in Sherwood Forest and the lovely Maid Marian, this swashbuckler set the standard for the story.
Errol Flynn brings his dashing charm to play the legend, supported by impeccably cast players as the familiar characters. With the director of ‘Angels with Dirty Faces’ and ‘Casablanca’ at the helm, it was a big-budget production, filmed in glorious Technicolor – “only the rainbow can duplicate its brilliance!” – with a rousing score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. This is fun for all the family, and considered one of the greatest adventure films.
Winner of 3 Academy Awards, for best art direction, editing, music score, and nominated for best picture. Counted among the 10 best films of the year by Film Daily and the New York Times.
Included on lists of the greatest films of all time by critics Roger Ebert and Barry Norman.
