Directed by Michael Ritchie

“Too Handsome. Too Young. Too Liberal. Doesn’t have a chance. He’s PERFECT!”
An election strategist courts an idealistic lawyer to run for the California senate, convincing him he can promote his values, speak freely on his issues, and have no interference from his father, a former governor. As his public popularity soars, his honesty and integrity come close to teetering off his platform.
Presented in a semi-documentary style, it’s a behind-the-scenes look at the manufacture, marketing and machinations involved in campaigning. Satirising the dance between politics and the media, it was described by the New York Times critic as “one of the few good, truly funny American political comedies ever made.”
Robert Redford imbues his image and charisma into the role, praised as “one of the strongest, most nuanced performances of his career – a sympathetic portrayal of a good man seduced by the mere prospect of power” by Time magazine, who counted it in the 15 best political films of all time.
Winner of best writing from the Academy Awards and Writers Guild of America.
Counted in the top ten films of the year by the National Board of Review.
