The Earrings of Madame de… (1953)
100 minutes – certificate U – in French with English subtitles
Directed by Max Ophuls
Starring Danielle Darrieux, Charles Boyer, Vittorio De Sica
The bored wife of a wealthy general needs to cover her debts, so sells a pair of diamond earrings, and as they pass hands between aristocrats, their mistresses, pawnbrokers and back again, they become linked to a love triangle shaped by lies, passion, and jealousy.
The director of ‘Letter from an Unknown Woman’ constructs a vision of turn-of-the-century Paris, adorned with Belle Epoque trappings, an opulent mise-en-scene and his celebrated camerawork: gliding, twirling, capturing circular patterns as tragedy closes in on the artifice. Critic Andrew Sarris has hailed it as “the most perfect film ever made.”
Nominated for the Academy Award for best costume design.
Voted among the greatest films of all time in critic’s polls by BBC, Sight and Sound, Village Voice, Movieline and Rolling Stone magazines, and They Shoot Pictures Don’t They.
