Diamonds of the Night (1964)
67 minutes – certificate 12 – in Czech with English subtitles
Directed by Jan Nemec
Starring Ladislav Jansky, Antonin Kumbera, Ilse Bischofova
Two teenage boys escape from a train transporting them between Nazi concentration camps and flee into the forest. Their tense journey over harsh terrain and fight for survival while evading recapture are seen alongside memory flashbacks, surreal dreams and hallucinatory visions.
Blending hard realism with lyricism and poetic visuals, there is a mastery over filmmaking in its visceral and physical photography, sound design, and non-linear narrative. Arnost Lustig’s novel ‘Darkness Casts No Shadow’ was adapted into an experimental mood piece, thriving on expressionism and its characters’ emotional states of mind. A key work of the Czech New Wave, “Nemec’s debut feature is one of the most thrilling and startlingly original works of cinema.”
Winner of the Grand Prize at a film festival in Germany.
